The mausoleum of Sheikh Gourari el Koraïchi dates back to the 7th century. It is one of the central elements in the life of the community. There is a festival every year to celebrate the life of the saint. Rachid Koraichi decided to bring it to life and restore it. A group of standards were found in the mausoleum of the type regularly found at places where the rites of Islam mystics are performed.
» I had been working for three years on my own banners when Ferrante and I discovered, by surprise, a room filled entirely with standards collected over dozens of years. The place was familiar to me and yet contained a room which had been hidden from me until that point because the door was hidden by a curtain. The curtain was taken down and the room appeared, revealing its contents. The discovery seemed to confirm for me the aptness of my artistic decision. In this particular project, the banners do not belong to a nation, a state, they are the homage of human beings to other human beings who have built a path to peace and tolerance« . (Rachid Koraïchi).
The work is not yet completed and should contain 99 pieces. Unfortunately, because of the war in Syria, only 75 have been made.
From there came the idea to make a standard for each ancestor linking the chain from the beginning until the prophet. The installation, Ancestors Linked to the Stars, originated from this idea.
